Hanukkah Candle Cookies

Makes about 36 cookies

80 minutes preparation (see below) / 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup butter, softened
- 1/3 cup oil
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Blue food coloring
Instructions:
- Beat butter and oil with an electric mixer or pastry cutter.
- Combine the sugar, flour, baking powder and salt, and add that to the mixture.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla.
- Divide the resulting dough in half and add the blue food coloring to half the dough.
- Cover and chill all the dough, at least one hour, preferably overnight.
- Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch.
- Using a butter knife, cut the dough into strips the length of a finger.
- To form the dough into candles, twist blue and white strips into braids.
- Bake the braided cookies on ungreased cookie sheets for 15 minutes in an oven preheated to 375 degrees.
